Gennaro Gattuso AC Milan, coming off a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Udinese last weekend, will need to grab all three points Saturday when they face Spal. The problems plaguing the Rossoneri have forced the team to struggle in the middle of the table for much of the season. In other words, the team, as Gattuso recently put it, aren’t playing pretty.

“We’re not Brad Pitt now, we’ve got to continue being as ugly as me and my beard, with dark circles under our eyes,” Gattuso told reporters.

Under Gattuso, the team got off to a slow start, but now finds themselves in a respectable seventh place. Gattuso knows, however, that his side need to pile on more wins against teams like Spal if they hope to gain a spot in Europe next season.

After spending so much money last summer, the team had a quiet January transfer window with no new players coming into the squad that had been revamped just six months ago.

“I didn’t want any new buys because I firmly believe in this squad. The club asked if I needed anything, but I always said we were fine as we were,” Gattuso added. “I know my ideas and the hard work of my staff. I keep my feet on the ground and try not to read too much that is said about me, because I know there’s a long way to go.”

The Rossoneri will be missing defender Andrea Conti, who recently suffered a cruciate ligament injury, and won’t be back until March. AC Milan aren’t the only team missing players. Spal will be missing defender Pa Konate and journeyman striker Marco Borriello, a former AC Milan player, for this weekend’s match. Both players have been bright spots for Spal in what has otherwise been a poor season for the team promoted from Serie B last year.

Spal, currently third from the bottom, desperately need the points to try to avoid relegation. However, AC Milan are the more desperate team. They’re a storied club that need to grab as many points as they can over the next few months as they try to make up ground.

Gattuso has turned some things around in his short time pacing the sidelines, but he has a long way to go before anyone will compare his team to the looks of a Hollywood actor. AC Milan defeated Spal 2-0 earlier this season. They’ll need to replicate that performance in order to stay in the top half of the table.
