Find out who will lead the field to the green flag at the 2018 Daytona 500 by watching qualifying live on Sunday, Feb. 11.
Can you believe it’s Speedweeks time already? If you’re a big NASCAR fan, you’re probably saying that it’s about time. The first official event to feature the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers is a big one, as it will be Daytona 500 qualifying on Sunday afternoon.
A strong argument can be made that qualifying is less important at the restrictor plate tracks than anywhere else, since you can make just about any starting spot work thanks to the draft. That said, sitting on the pole for the Daytona 500 comes with some perks, including pit stall selection and the ability to take things relatively easy during the 125-mile races on Thursday that set the rest of the grid.
On top of that, starting out front means you’re less likely to get caught up in big, multi-car wrecks that often start halfway back in the pack — if you can stay there. Fortunately, cars that have enough speed to stand out during Daytona 500 qualifying often have the muscle to challenge for the lead in the race itself.
Chase Elliott will also be looking to do something pretty remarkable, as he’s seeking his third consecutive Daytona 500 pole. He’d undoubtedly trade them for his first win in NASCAR’s top series, but it would still be a cool accomplishment if he pulls it off.
