Olympic figure skating: Pairs free skate team results and highlights

Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim return in the 2018 Winter Olympics pairs’ team free skate. We have the results and highlights for you right here.

The second night of the 2018 Winter Olympics figure skating included the pairs’ team free skate competition, and once again representing Team USA was married couple Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim.

Italy’s Valentina Marchei and Ondrej Hotarek, wearing sequined harlequin-costumes, earned a stellar 138.44 for their performance, setting the bar high for the rest of the teams.

Team USA’s Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim were solid through their performance aside from a fall from Chris during one of their side by side jumps, earning them two red marks. The rest of their performance was strong, with only one other red mark in an otherwise sea of green. The duo finished with a 126.56, good for third place at that point in the competition.

All eyes were on Team Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford as they completed an elegant performance that landed them a 148.51, putting them solidly in first place.

The last skate of the night went to Olympic Athletes from Russia’s Natalya Zabiyako and Aleksandr Enbert. With the Russians in second place overall, their performance would impact Team USA’s standings in the team event going into the final night of team skating on Sunday. Zabiyako had a slight fall and her knee touched the ground on a transition in between elements, which lowered their score slightly. In the end, they finished with a 133.28, good for third place.

Here are the final results for the pairs’ team free skate event:

  1. Canada – 148.51
  2. Italy – 138.44
  3. Olympic Athletes from Russia – 133.28
  4. United States – 126.56
  5. Japan – 97.67

After the pairs’ team free skate, Team USA received seven points, lifting them to 36 points overall for third place in the team event going into the final night of competition. Canada is in first place with 45 points and Olympic Athletes from Russia has 39 points.

Team figure skating medals will be awarded on Sunday, February 11 after the completion of the men’s team free skate, the women’s team free skate and the ice dance free skate.
