Chris Mazdzer won the silver medal in the luge, the first American to win a medal in men’s singles at the Winter Olympics.

Team USA is starting to gain momentum in the medal hunt at the 2018 Winter Olympics. With Redmond Gerard winning gold in the men’s slopestyle, Team USA was officially on the board. Luger Chris Mazdzer added a second medal to Team USA’s total with a silver in luge.

It is Team USA’s first ever men’s singles Olympic luge medal. With Erin Hamlin winning the first singles Olympic luge medal at the 2014 Sochi Games, the United States has finally rounded out their luge trophy case.

After the first two runs of the Winter Olympics, Mazdzer sat in fourth place and had a shot at contending for a medal. Germany’s Felix Loch faltered on his final run, allowing Austria’s David Gleirscher to move from second into first place and Chris Mazdzer from fourth to second. Mazdzer also broke the course record to move into second place.

Roman Repilov, an Olympic Athlete from Russia, was in third place entering the final two runs and faltered on his third run to allow Mazdzer to leapfrog him as well.

It’s no surprise, Mazdzer’s second run was the fastest in that heat demonstrating he was capable of medaling. It’s a huge jump in performance for Mazdzer though, who finished 13th at the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games.
