Olympics women’s hockey, Canada vs. Russia highlights, score, recap
Team Canada made a statement in their 2018 Winter Olympics women’s hockey debut, beating the Olympic Athletes of Russia 5-0.
On Sunday, Feb. 11, the two Olympics women’s hockey favorites got their tournament underway. Team USA got an impressive 3-1 win over Finland. The game wasn’t as close as the score reflected, as America dominated for the better part of the match. Team Canada, gunning for their fifth straight gold medal, made a huge statement by beating the Olympic Athletes of Russia 5-0.
Though the first period saw no goals, Canada came out very strong, dominating for a large part of the first 20 minutes. They finally got rewarded in the second period, as Rebecca Johnston opened the scoring with an early second-period goal.
This period saw Canada pick up three goals. Haley Irwin got a deflection from Johnston for the second goal of the period. Towards the end of the period, Melanie Daoust picked up a goal of her own to make it 3-0 Canada.
Johnston picked up her second goal of the day in the third period. She went top shelf to make it 4-0 Canada. Their captain Marie-Philip Poulin put in a loose puck after a rebound to make it 5-0.
So far, their women’s team looks as strong as ever. Both Canada and the United States looked excellent today, so expect them to have a heck of a game when they face each other on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
The Olympic Athletes of Russia looked completely overwhelmed by their opponent. They had very few scoring chances during the game.

For Canada, they advance to 1-0-0 on the tournament. They shall continue their Group A play when they take on Finland on Tuesday, Feb. 13. This game will start at 2:40 a.m. ET, so it’ll be another early morning if you want to watch Canada.
As for OAR, they will face Team USA on Tuesday, starting at 7:10 a.m. ET.
