After the last qualifying rounds are complete, the women’s moguls field will be whittled to a final six. Here’s how you can watch the medal round.
Qualifying began on Feb. 8 and continued through several rounds into the weekend. The final qualifying round takes place right before the medal runs. Six women will advance through the field of 30 hopefuls to get a shot at gold.
To get to the medal round, the six women who make it will have navigated several qualifying rounds. The first, which took place three days before the final, offered the first chance for immediate qualification. That run separated out most of the contenders from the rest of the hopefuls.
In total, 10 women qualified straight through to the final after the first qualifying round.
That included most of the favorites. FIS Freestyle World Cup moguls leader Jaelin Kauf made it through with the fifth-best run at Phoenix Park. So too did defending gold medalist Justine Dufour-Lapointe, who finished right ahead of Kauf in fourth.
Leading the way after the first qualifying round was Perrine Laffont. In the process, Laffont set herself up for a shot at France’s second-ever moguls medal. Also going through was Japan’s Arisa Murata and Kazakhstan’s Yulia Galysheva. They will hope to keep Canada and the United States from sweeping the podium for a third straight Winter Olympics.
Kauf, after all, is not invulnerable. She has been steady on the World Cup circuit, but she was also still a teenager at home when the last Olympics were held on Russian soil. The American and Canadian dominance in recent Olympiads is hardly guaranteed. Fans in North America will definitely want to wake up early to catch the medal round to find out who wins.
