The first of 10 gold medals up for grabs in freestyle skiing is the women’s moguls. Here’s how you can catch the moguls action online live from Pyeongchang.
Moguls are one of the original freestyle skiing events, first appearing on the Olympic program at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville. They were the only freestyle skiing medal event for both men and women. On the women’s side, Donna Weinbrecht claimed the first gold medal in the event for the United States.
Since then, there have only been two Winter Olympics where American women failed to place at least one moguls skier on the podium. Hannah Kearney is the most recent moguls star for the Stars and Stripes. Kearney won gold in Vancouver in 2010, then followed up with bronze four years ago in Sochi.
Kearney has retired, but Americans could once again claim the top spot on the podium. 21-year-old Jaelin Kauf currently leads the FIS Freestyle World Cup moguls race after winning two of the first seven stops and landing on the podium twice more. The daughter of two world champion moguls skiers could add Olympic gold to the family’s multigenerational trophy haul.
Kauf will have plenty of competition for the gold, however. Among the contenders are a few other Americans aside from Kauf. Morgan Schild, Keaton McCargo, and Tess Johnson could also challenge for the podium.
Americans aren’t the only ones with a legitimate shot at Olympic glory in the moguls.
The woman to beat is still Canada’s Justine Dufour-Lapointe, the defending Olympic gold medalist. Justine and sister Chloe took the top two spots on the podium in Sochi, and they are both currently in the top 12 of the World Cup standings. Audrey Robichaud could also snatch a podium spot for Canada.
Canadians and Americans have swept the podium at each of the past two Winter Olympics. Australia’s Britteny Cox and Kazakh skier Yulia Galysheva are the best hopes to break up the North American hegemony that has existed over Olympic women’s moguls for the past eight years.
