The 2018 Winter Olympics snowboarding men’s halfpipe discipline will begin its qualification round late on Monday, Feb. 12 as the field of 30 is narrowed down to 12 for the finals the following day.

Along with giant slalom, halfpipe is the oldest Olympic snowboarding event, having debuted at the 1998 Nagano Games.

All the information you need to watch the men’s halfpipe qualifiers in Pyeongchang is below, as well as a preview of the athletes who will hope to advance to the final round on Feb. 13.

The entire Olympic snowboarding schedule can be found here.

How to Watch:

TV: NBC, NBCSN

Live Stream: NBCOlympics.com

App: NBC Sports

Date: Monday, Feb. 12

Start Time:  11:00 p.m. ET

What to Watch:

There are two men’s halfpipe qualification events to watch, both coming in just under the wire to air on Monday:

  • Men’s Halfpipe Qualification Run 1 (11:00 p.m. ET)
  • Men’s Halfpipe Qualification Run 2 (11:56 p.m. ET)

30 men will ride in the qualification round, but only 12 will advance to the finals, which will be held on Tuesday and will consist of three runs.

In the halfpipe discipline, riders traverse the entire length of the pipe, doing tricks after riding up its 22-foot walls. Judges will score each run and award up to 100 points (which virtually no one ever gets); they will be evaluating riders on execution, variety, amplitude and difficulty.

Riders can try to bust out their most difficult tricks, but they’re going to lose points if they don’t execute them perfectly. The discipline is a balancing act between going big and relying on tricks riders know they can perform well.

In the 2018 Winter Games, the biggest favorite to win gold in halfpipe is American Shaun White, who competes in his fourth Olympics and hopes to win his third medal after he finished a heartbreaking fourth in the 2014 Sochi Games. But Australian Scotty James will give white a run for his money and will almost certainly earn a spot on the podium Tuesday.
