Freestyle skiing action at the 2018 Winter Olympics continues with the finals of the men’s moguls. Here’s how to see the medal round from Pyeongchang.
In the first qualifying round of Olympic men’s moguls in Pyeongchang, 10 athletes qualified through for the final without having to go through a second run. That included FIS Moguls World Cup leader Mikaël Kingsbury of Canada, who led the first qualifying round with a strong run.
Right behind Kingsbury were other top contenders such as Dmitriy Reikherd, Alexsandr Smyshliaev, and Ikuma Horishima. Ten more skiers got their chance to go through to the finals of moguls in a second qualifying round. But the handful at the top of the leaderboard after the first jump proved why they have been atop the FIS World Cup standings all year.
The unique three-round system in moguls for the finals round progressively whittles down the field. The first round began with the 20 skiers that made it through the two rounds of qualifying. Over the first two rounds, the field is whittled down to six for the ultimate shot at a podium finish.
Can Kingsbury land his long-sought gold medal?
The Canadian phenom lost in Sochi to rival and compatriot Alexandre Bilodeau. Bilodeau, though, has since retired. In the process, Kingsbury has easily become the most dominant figure in men’s moguls. Nobody has finished atop more World Cup podiums than the all-time great.
Now Kingsbury will be looking for the elusive and long-sought Olympic gold medal that would put the exclamation point on a storied career. Will he pull it off, or could another skier spring one of the biggest upsets yet in the early days of the 2018 Winter Olympics?
