Who will make the medal round in men’s moguls? Here’s how you can see who qualifies for a shot at gold by watching Round 2 live from Pyeongchang.
Four years ago, Canada’s Alexandre Bilodeau became the first freestyle skier in any discipline to defend Olympic gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He retired later that year at the end of the 2013-2014 FIS Freestyle World Cup season.
That opens the door for Bilodeau’s longtime rival, his compatriot Mikaël Kingsbury, to enter Pyeongchang as the favorite. Kingsbury currently leads the FIS World Cup standings with a nearly insurmountable lead. He won six of the first seven events of the season prior to the Olympics. Only a second-place finish at the final event before the Olympics marred a perfect start to the season.
Gone not only is Bilodeau but also longtime favorite Dale Begg-Smith, the Australian who took second behind Kingsbury in Vancouver after winning gold in Torino. But Aleksandr Smyshliaev will return after taking bronze on the home track in Sochi four years ago. The Russian is one of the athletes competing under the Olympic flag this year after the Russian Federation was banned.
Then there are newcomers with big dreams.
The one person who has finished ahead of Kingsbury this season, Japan’s Ikuma Horishima, will try to best the Canadian a second straight time. Horishima is currently fifth in the FIS World Cup standings and could spring a surprise.
Also in the hunt will be Dmitriy Reiherd, the Kazakh skier who is second behind Kingsbury in the FIS World Cup standings. He has finished second on four occasions and third on another this season. Reiherd has been the most consistent skiers so far this season on the moguls aside from the Canadian leader.
