The women get their first shot at Alpine glory when they take to the giant slalom course at Yongpyong Alpine Centre. Here’s how to see who will claim gold.

Eight years ago in Vancouver, Viktoria Rebensburg was a 20-year-old Olympic gold medalist in the giant slalom. In the process, she took down Slovenian legend Tina Maze and Austria’s Elisabeth Görgl. Rebensburg won gold by just 0.04 seconds over Maze

In Sochi four years later, Maze got her vengeance by pipping the field for gold. Rebensburg was relegated to the bronze position on the podium by not only Maze but also Austria’s Anna Fenninger.

But now Maze is retired, opening the path for Rebensburg to return to the top step of the podium. The German is currently leading the FIS Alpine World Cup standings in the giant slalom. If she holds on to the top spot, Rebensburg will win her third World Cup title in the Alpine discipline.

Who could threaten Rebensburg’s shot at a second Olympic giant slalom gold?

Tessa Worley sits right behind Rebensburg in the World Cup standings. She is hungry to come out strong after missing the 2018 Vancouver Winter Olympics with a knee injury. The French star is the defending World Cup champ in the giant slalom. Worley could spoil Rebensburg’s shot at summiting the podium this time around.

American Mikaela Shiffrin is better known as the best slalom specialist in the world. But Shiffrin has been working on improving her giant slalom form, and she took the silver medal at last year’s FIS Alpine World Championships. This could be a chance for another breakout performance for the 22-year-old star.
