Sweden continues their run of dominance at Olympics women’s hockey, blowing out Korea 8-0 .
Going into Monday’s Olympics women’s hockey match between Sweden and Korea, everyone expected the former to win. After all, Sweden’s one of the best women’s hockey teams in the world. They proved it on Monday, blowing out the host unified Korea team 8-0. This puts Sweden in first place in Group B as they look to make things easy for themselves in the medal round.
The Swedes played beautifully on Monday. They got out to an early 4-0 lead thanks to four first-period goals. Sweden had to get the pro-Korea crowd out of the match and they were able to do so just four minutes into the game. Maja Nylen Persson provided the scoring, picking up a power-play goal just 18 seconds into the penalty.
Fellow defenseman Elin Lundberg picked up a goal just before the 10 minute mark to make it 2-0. Goals by Johanna Fallman (another defenseman) and Erica Uden Johansson made it 4-0 by the end of 20 minutes. Three of Sweden’s first four goals were by defensemen.
What’s most impressive about their dominance is that they were able to spread the wealth around. Seven different players scored for Sweden. Forward Pernilla Winberg was the lone Swede to score multiple goals.
Lundberg picked up two assists along with her first-period goal. This tied her with Winberg for the team lead in points (three). Goaltender Sara Grahn stopped each of the 19 shots on goal she faced. Korea goaltender So Jung Shin was able to save 42 of the 50 shots on goal she saw.
