Black Panther: Is Wakanda a real country?

Black Panther will be set in the country of Wakanda, a place referenced before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Is it real, though?

Black Panther will bring a new part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to life: Wakanda, an African nation. Asgard, New York City, Sokovia and planets in outer space were already explored in the MCU, so look for this movie to break ground with Wakanda.

These places usually get destroyed in the aftermath of Marvel movies, however. The Avengers saw New York City get damaged by the “Battle of New York,” with consequences eventually suffered; Sokovia was ravaged in Avengers: Age of Ultron; Lagos had multiple fatalities after Scarlet Witch threw an exploding Crossbones into a nearby building; Asgard can’t be forgotten, as it literally blew up to close Thor: Ragnarok. Given the battles between heroes and villains in these movies, expect Wakanda to be impacted by a potential Black Panther vs. Erik Killmonger fight.

Before that, it’s possible Black Panther explores Wakanda and everything this nation holds. It should make for a fascinating two-plus hour experience, and a place anyone may want to visit, right?

Well, if you have any desire to visit Wakanda, stop right now, because it does not exist. Yes, even though it’s part of a real continent, Africa, in the MCU, Wakanda is a fictional country that’s used for comic book and movie purposes only. So, if you search for an online map or find a globe of the world, you will not find Wakanda anywhere in Africa.

This may disappoint some moviegoers because given the trailer for Black Panther, Wakanda looks beautiful and a spectacle the likes of which you don’t often see. However, it’s just a movie set with plenty of CGI.
