The Olympic curling men’s tournament kicks off with the first session of the round robin, with Canada and Italy doing battle.
When you think of Olympic dominance in winter sports, Russia is the easy crutch to lean on. But don’t sleep on the Canadians, who have a lowkey prowess about them that is starting to shine through.
For such a polite people, you can’t be surprised that their athletes are humble about being the best in the world. Already, Canada has collected a gold in the team event for figure skating and added a mixed double curling gold to the pile.
Now comes the potential trifecta with the start of the men’s curling tournament in South Korea. The Canuck curlers first test will be against Italy, with action starting on Tuesday night Stateside time (it’s already Wednesday in South Korea, so don’t get thrown by the wonky schedules).
The full list of matchups in the first session of the men’s curling round robin is as follows:
- Denmark vs. Sweden
- Canada vs. Italy
- USA vs. Korea
- Switzerland vs. Great Britain
The Canadians were early stars at the Olympics, winning gold in the mixed doubles competition.
