The women’s curling tournament begins with a late-night stateside session, including a match-up between Team USA and Japan. Here’s how to watch online.
Every day during the men’s and women’s Olympic curling tournaments — that start today, by the way — there are three sessions, alternating men’s, women’s, men’s; women’s, men’s, women’s. They happen over the course of the day in South Korea, meaning, of course, they happen over the course of the night here. The first session of the day typically runs 7 p.m. ET to 10 p.m. ET, the second runs midnight to 3 a.m. ET and the final round of the day starts at 6 a.m. ET, wrapping around 9 a.m.
The women’s tournament starts in the middle slot, meaning the first games, including one between USA and Japan, will be live for the night owls.
Both of the men’s and women’s tournaments are between 10 teams, played over 12 sessions, on account of the fact only four games can take place at any one time. Japan, USA, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, China and the Olympic Athletes of Russia will all be represented in the women’s tournament. Canada (duh), Switzerland and Sweden are the medal favorites.
The first session match-ups are as follows:
- Japan vs. USA
- Olympic Athletes of Russia vs. Great Britain
- Denmark vs. Sweden
- Switzerland vs. China

The USA women’s team is full of veteran curlers making their Olympic debuts. Only Becca Hamilton, who played in the inaugural mixed doubles tournament with her brother Matt, will have any semblance of Olympic experience. Still, the accomplished team, led by skip Nina Roth, has high hopes.
