The USA starts their tournament off with a game against Slovenia. Here is how you can watch the live stream.
Finally, men’s ice hockey is set to get started on Wednesday, Feb. 14. The Russians battle Slovakia, while the rest of Group B, the USA and Slovenia will duke it out at the same time. Behind Russia, the USA are the favorites to emerge from the group in second place. Starting off with a victory against Slovenia would make that goal much easier.
On paper, this match up should be fairly one sided. Although the USA team is hindered by the NHL not allowing it’s players to participate in the games, they still should be a superior team. The Americans come into the Olympics ranked fifth in the world, while Slovenia ranks fifteenth. Statistics and rankings do not always tell the full story, but the evidence is there.
Slovenia has not been given much of a chance in this tournament. Although the odds may not be in their favor, they will not go down without a fight. Their captain, Jan Mursak, spent quite a few years in the NHL before moving to the KHL to play with CKSA Moscow. Mursak will need to carry his team if they want to have a chance on Wednesday.
The USA captain, Brian Gionta played in the NHL for fifteen seasons, last playing in last season. Because he is no longer under contract with the NHL, rather a practice deal with the AHL, he is able to play in the Olympics. The impact of not having NHL players on the roster remains to be seen.
