Olympics women’s hockey, Canada blows away Finland, 4-1

Canada continues their dominance at Olympics women’s hockey after topping Finland 4-1 

Going into the 2018 Winter Olympics, Canada has won four consecutive gold medals in Olympics women’s hockey. Obviously, this makes their expectations quite high. Thus far in the tournament, Canada has lived up to their hype. On Tuesday, Feb. 13, they had a very impressive performance, beating Finland 4-1.

Canada advances to 2-0-0 during the Olympics. They got their scoring started very early in the match, as Meghan Acosta scored merely 35 seconds into the game. She put home a flawless feed from teammate Melodie Daoust. Captain Marie-Philip Poulin put home the second goal of the first period to make it 2-0 Canada at the 17:11 mark.

In the second period, they continued their brilliant dominance, notching another two goals. The third goal of the day was scored by Daoust. Picking up the assists on her goal were Laura Fortino and Acosta. Canada’s fourth goal, the second of the second period, was scored by Jillian Saulnier. Rebecca Johnston, who picked up two goals in their first win against the Olympic Athletes of Russia, got the assist on her goal.

Finland was able to avoid the shutout, as long-time skater Riikka Valila put home a goal just over seven minutes into the third period. The 43-year-old’s goal was assisted by Susanna Tapani and Michelle Kervinen.

Canada goaltender Shannon Szabados stopped 22 of the 23 shots she saw, doing a mighty fine job in net. For Finland, Noora Raty made 28 of 32 saves.

Canada’s next game will be on Wednesday against Team USA. This is the best rivalry in women’s hockey and arguably the greatest in professional sports. These two teams have seen each other many times over the years. Team USA and Canada have created some of the most special, unforgettable moments in women’s hockey. Expect nothing less than a fantastic game on Wednesday, beginning at 10:10 p.m. ET.
