3. Tre Boston

With Gus Bradley as defensive coordinator, the Chargers have a Seahawks’ like scheme that stresses having a rangy free safety that usually aligns in the deep middle of the field. There are a lot of intriguing safeties entering free agency this year, but most are better suited to play near the line of scrimmage rather than as a single high defender. He isn’t spectacular, but Boston excels in coverage and has proven to be able to handle playing well off the line of scrimmage.

Of course, unlike the other free agent safeties, Boston wouldn’t have any learning curve if retained by the Chargers. Boston has good size and as free agents go, is very young at just 25-years-old. Boston played over 1,000 snaps for Los Angeles and proved very reliable in coverage. Run defense isn’t his forte, but that isn’t asked of him all that much in this system.

Considering where Los Angeles is as a team, it would be great if there was a real high-end free safety to go all in on, but that player doesn’t look to really exist this year. Sometimes sticking with a known commodity is the right choice.
