Brandon Rios is a throwback boxer who is willing to eat five punches to deliver one. His battles over the years have taken their toll, and Danny Garcia might put an end to his career.

Danny Garcia is one of the best welterweight boxers in the world. He lost his WBC title last March to Keith Thurman in a close split decision. He’s still a dangerous boxer, and he has the ability to permanently end Brandon Rios’s career.

Brandon Rios is a blood and guts brawler. He lacks boxing skill but excels in toughness. Rios has a crowd-pleasing style where he eats tremendous punishment in order to deliver devastation to his opponent.

He has taken part in many wars where he has been the victor. In his three brutal bouts with Mike Alvarado, he won two by stoppage. Alvarado got the worst of it, but Rios also absorbed damage.

Manny Pacquiao beat him up in 2013, and Timothy Bradley delivered such a devastating assault to Rios in 2015 that referee, Tony Weeks, mercilessly stopped the contest in the 9th.

Rios went into a brief retirement which ended in the summer of 2017 when he knocked out Aaron Herrera, a career journeyman. Rios is taking an ill-advised step up in competition fighting Garcia.

Garica has a record of 33-1, with 19 knockouts. He’s beaten some big names over the course of his 10-year career. He holds victories over Nate Campbell, Kendall Holt, Amir Khan, Erik Morales, Zab Judah and Lucas Matthysse to name a few.

Garcia has a robust resume but he has also looked mediocre at times. He has majority decisions over Mauricio Herrera and Lamont Peterson but they could have gone the other way.

The Herrera bout, in particular, was a controversial decision. According to CompuBox (via Boxingscene.com), Herrera out landed Garcia 221 to 204 in total punches. Garcia’s punches were harder, but Herrera controlled the action and outboxed Garcia. Garcia received a gift with the final decision.

Lately, Garcia has performed well. While he lost to Keith Thurman in his last bout, he performed admirably against one of the best boxers in the game. It was a close fight where Thurman was able to outwork Garcia.

If Garcia can nearly beat Thurman, he should have no problem with a faded Rios. Rios has been inactive, boxing only once in a little over two years against subpar opposition. He’s not ready to deal with a top-tier boxer like Garcia.

Rios’s brawling style is perfect for Garcia. Rios has no head movement which means he provides Garcia with an easy target. Garcia has strong boxing fundamentals and faster hands than Rios. He can hit Rios while evading his counter-attacks.

More importantly, Rios’s skills and ability to take punches are diminished. Garcia is going to hurt him and eventually stop him in this bout. This fight shouldn’t go past the ninth round. Rios is a courageous fighter, but his love for boxing will prove detrimental to his health.
