Olympic gold medalist Bode Miller is in Pyeongchang, but he isn’t competing — here’s why.
Olympic gold medal skier Bode Miller has been retired since Oct. 2017 but that hasn’t stopped him from making an appearance in Pyeongchang, South Korea for the Winter Games this week. Though he isn’t competing, he is on the slopes — as a first-time correspondent for NBC.
But it hasn’t gone great so far.
Miller was forced to apologize this week after making an inappropriate comment about the struggles on the slope of Austria’s Anna Veith to the fact that she had recently gotten married. The comment came during the women’s giant slalom event.
“The knee is certainly an issue,” Miller said during the broadcast. “I want to point out she also got married. And it’s historically very challenging to race on the World Cup with a family or after being married. Not to blame the spouses, but I just want to toss that out there, that it could be her husband’s fault.”
Miller offered the apology on-air later in the day during the men’s event and also took to his official Twitter to clear up the matter.
I had the love and support of my wife while I was racing and I know it can be a huge asset. #happyvalentinesday

Miller is considered the best skier of all time and competed in five Olympic events from 1998-2014. He is a 6-time Olympic medalist having picked up hardware in Salt Lake City, United States (2 silver), Vancouver, Canada (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), and Sochi, Russia (1 bronze).

Miller has always been known as one of the “bad boys” in the sport stemming from his poor showing in Turin, Italy when he failed to medal in any of the 2006 competitions. Many felt this was due to him partying too hard.
