It was a thrilling evening at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Thursday saw the completion of the men’s and women’s individual events. After seeing Hanna Oeberg of Sweden prevent Germany’s Laura Dahlmeier from sweeping her way to gold, Norway’s Johannes Thingnes Boe would take home the gold in the men’s 20km individual.
Boe finished with a time of 48 minutes and 3.8 seconds, with two penalties. While he finished outside of the top 20 in the men’s sprint and pursuit, Boe was able to take home his first Olympic medal on Thursday night. His best finish in the Olympics prior to this gold medal performance was being part of the 4×7.5km relay in Sochi, where Norway came in fourth.
Taking home the silver medal is Jakov Fak of Slovenia. He earned a second-place finish with a time of 48 minutes and 9.3 seconds, not missing a single target in the shooting portion. This is Fak’s first medal of the 2018 Pyeongchang Games and the second of his Olympic Career. He previously took home the bronze medal in the 10km sprint in Vancouver.

While visibility was certainly on the women’s side in the individual, the same could not be said for the men. Targets were missed by many biathletes on Thursday night in Pyeongchang. This had the Americans really struggle in the individual. None of the athletes came close to medalling.
Tim Burke did the best for Team USA with a 41st place finish. Sean Doherty was not far behind him with a 44th place finish. Lowell Bailey came in 51st place and Leif Nordgren came in 66th place out of 86 competitors. The United States is running out of opportunities to medal in the biathlon, as America is now 0-6 in its first six tries. Only five remain.
