More technical than the downhill, faster than a giant slalom, Super-G offers a unique Alpine challenge. Here’s how to watch the men’s competition.

Norwegians have dominated the Super-G in the 21st century. Kjetil André Aamont won the event in Salt Lake City in 2002, then repeated as Olympic gold medalist four years later in Torino. Aamont was succeeded by Aksel Lund Svindal as the Olympic champion in Super-G in Vancouver. Then, four years ago in Sochi, Svindal was overtaken by another compatriot, Kjetil Jansrud.

Both Svindal and Jansrud are back in 2018 to try to keep Norway’s streak alive atop the Super-G medal podium. Jansrud and Svindal currently rank No. 1 and No. 2 respectively on the FIS World Cup in the event. After taking gold and silver in the men’s downhill, the Norwegian pair will have their sights set on hogging the glory in the speed events one more time.

It won’t be a walkover for the Scandinavian duo, though. A quartet of Austrians sit right behind Jansrud and Svindal in the World Cup standings, and any one of the four could claim victory. Matthias Mayer failed to defend his Olympic gold in the downhill from Sochi, and he will be hungry to get back on a podium. He is joined in the hunt by countrymen Vincent Kriechmayer, Hannes Reichelt and Max Franz as podium contenders in the event.

Look out as well for a few dark-horse candidates

Italians Peter Fill, Christof Innerhofer, and Dominik Paris could all factor into the medal hunt. So too could German skiers Josef Ferstl, Thomas Dressen, and Andreas Sander. Another Norwegian, Aleksander Aamont Kilde, could give his compatriots fits if he manages to put things together in South Korea.

With Bode Miller retired from the sport, American hopes rest with two-time medalist Andrew Weibrecht. Currently sitting just 25th in the World Cup standings, Weibrecht has pulled off suprises in the past two Winter Olympics. He could be due for another shocker if he can ski a clean run.
