Finland blew out the Olympic Athletes of Russia 5-1 in Olympics women’s hockey to conclude the group portion of the tournament
The group stage of the 2018 Winter Olympics is over. In Olympics women’s hockey, the quarterfinals are set now that Finland has beaten the Olympic Athletes of Russia 5-1. This ensures that the former will be the third seed out of Group A while the latter will be the fourth seed.
Finland got their first goal with just over two minutes left in the first period. Michelle Karvinen scored on the power-play, with Jenni Hiirkoski picking up the lone assist. Finland scored two goals in the second period, breaking out for the first time in the tournament.
Karvinen put the puck in the net for the first of the two, this one a power-play strike just like her first-period goal. Wily veteran forward Riika Valila scored with under a minute remaining in the period to give Finland a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.
The Olympic Athletes of Russia picked up their lone goal courtesy of Anna Shokhina, with Lyudmila Belyakova picking up the assist. Finland answered with two more goals, scored by Minnamari Tuominen and Petra Nieminen.
Finnish netminder Noora Raty stopped 24 of the 25 shots she saw. Meanwhile, her Russian counterpart Nadezhda Morozova saved 32 of the 37 shots she faced.

What’s Next?
Both teams will advance to the medal round quarterfinals. Group A is the strong group of the two, so all four teams get to play in the medal round. Finland will face Sweden in the lower portion of the bracket. The winner of their game will take on Team USA in the semifinals.
On the other half of the bracket, the Olympic Athletes of Russia will square off against Switzerland, who has looked quite good thus far. The winner of their game will face Canada in the semifinals.
