Who are the commentators of the NBC figure skating live stream?
They’re definitely not Tara Lipinski, Johnny Weir and Terry Gannon. So who are the Australian woman and Canadian man on the figure skating live stream?
NBC is the official and sole broadcaster of the Winter Olympics and they’re offering every event in multiple forms, in multiple places. And as figure skating fans are discovering, not all broadcasts are the same.
The Olympic broadcasts on NBC, NBCSN, CNBC and USA (yes! USA network) feature commentary, fashion and skating legends Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir, bringing humor, expertise and wit, with Terry Gannon playing the straight and everyman. You can hear the trio on any television broadcast, whether you’re watching the primetime option on NBC with just the top skaters or the full coverage on the NBCSN.
Things are slightly more complicated in the real of live streams. NBC provides live streams to every single Olympic event through the NBC Sports App and through live streams on their website. The options for figure skating appear the same as those on TV: the primetime multi-sport broadcast or the figure skating specific stream.
However, viewers choosing to watch the figure skating stream on NBC.com or through the app — particularly now there’s so much double-booking on the primetime feed — have discovered that the voices providing commentary are certainly not Lipinski and Weir.
Redditors with the same question identify the woman as Australian Belinda Noonan for the expertise and the color commentator is a yet-to-be-identified Canadian color commentator.
The reasoning? Well, NBC outsources commentary to some of the events to OBS — Olympic Broadcast Services — and whichever international English-language commentators they have to cover the games. Why they couldn’t stream the NBCSN full broadcast with Weir and Lipinski is unclear.
