12 women remain in the hunt for medals in women’s aerials. Here’s how you can watch all the action live from Phoenix Park in Pyeongchang.
Defending Olympic gold medalist Alla Tsuper of Belarus had to sweat out a second jump in aerials qualifying. On the second run off the ramp, though, Tsuper nailed her trick and stuck the landing to join 11 other women in the finals on Friday.
Joining Tsuper in the last dozen is Xu Mengtao, who finished second behind Tsuper at the Sochi Winter Olympics four years ago. Xu slotted in right behind Alexandra Orlova and Hanna Huskova, competing respectively for the Olympic Athletes from Russia and Belarus.
The surprise entrants into the finals field are a pair of Americans. Attempting relatively elementary jumps on their second run, Kiley McKinnon and Madison Olsen managed to snatch the final two qualifying spots in the finals.
How will the final play out?
The system this year at the 2018 Winter Olympics is similar to years past. All 12 aerials specialists will get a chance to jump in the opening round. From that group, three will be eliminated ahead of the second round of the finals.
In similar fashion, the field will be winnowed down from nine to six heading into the medal round. Unlike other freestyle events like the halfpipe, scores do not carry over from round to round in aerials. As a result, the final six skiers will contest a true medal round in the third round of the finals.
