2018 Winter Olympics: Who is hosting the next Olympics?
By Zach Bigalke
It is never too early to think about the next Olympics on the horizon. Here is the list of the upcoming host cities for both the Summer and Winter Games.
The International Olympic Committee selected Tokyo in 2013 over Istanbul and Madrid in the final vote. It marks the second time in Olympic history the Japanese capital city will host the Summer Games. Tokyo last hosted the 1964 Summer Games. The 1964 Games marked the first time an Asian city hosted the Olympics. In the process, Tokyo joins Athens, London, Paris, and Los Angeles as cities that have hosted multiple Summer Olympiads.
The Olympics remain in Asia for the 2022 Winter Olympiad. After the conclusion of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Games, the focus for winter athletes shifts to Beijing. The Chinese capital, which served as the host for the 2008 Summer Olympics, will become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics in the century-long history of the event. Beijing won the bid over Almaty, Kazakhstan, the only other finalist after Oslo, Norway dropped its bid.
Where do the Olympics go after Beijing?
After Tokyo in 2020, we already know next two cities for the Summer Olympic Games. Paris was chosen to host the 2024 Summer Games ahead of a group of host cities that dwindled over time as Hamburg, Budapest, and Rome all withdrew their bids prior to the final vote in 2017.
Paris eventually won out over Los Angeles for the 2024 Summer Games. With the proliferation of withdrawn bids, the IOC decided also to take an unprecedented step. Instead of waiting for the 2028 vote, it determined two host cities at one voting session. Los Angeles will join London as the only three-time hosts of the Summer Games after being granted the 2028 Olympiad.
Next: Winter Olympics: How many US athletes are going to South Korea?
With the 2026 Winter Games still on the table, three US cities are in the running. 2002 Winter Olympics host Salt Lake City is ramping up its bid to host a second time. Lake Placid, which hosted twice before, also is considering a bid in partnership with Albany or possibly Quebec City. Denver, which has withdrawn bids in the past, is mulling another run at hosting a Winter Olympiad. Also in the running is Calgary, host of the 1988 Winter Games, along with the Austrian bid by Graz and Schladming.
