George Groves defeats Chris Eubank Jr. in a violent clash
George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr. met in a highly anticipated super middleweight showdown. It was a thrilling bout with lots of action.
Boxing experts suggested the fight between Chris Eubank Jr. and George Groves would be a Fight of the Year contender and they were right.
The opening round was typical of most. Both boxers were feeling each other out. Groves took the center of the ring, threw fast jabs and controlled the distance. Eubank looked like he was trying to get inside but couldn’t.
Eubank took the center of the ring in the second round but Groves pushed him out of it. Surprisingly, Groves was the aggressor and took the fight to Eubank. He threw a left hook in the middle of the ring that hurt Eubank. Groves continued to hurt Eubank and his legs looked rubbery.
In the third round, a bad cut opened up over the right eye of Eubank and things were snowballing out of control for him. He tried to throw power shots, but Groves countered well.
Things calmed down in the first half of the fourth round but midway through Eubank tried to get inside but got hit with counter punches. Eubank followed Groves around the ring instead of trying to cut him off. Eubank threw a flurry at the end of the round and some of the punches hit Groves, but they were out of control and wild.
The fifth round started with a clean Eubank left hook. He hit Groves with several more winging punches, but they clashed heads again and Eubank got the worst of it. Eubank had a better round but his eye was a bloody mess.
Things got rough in the sixth round when Groves pushed Eubank through the ropes and Eubank hit Groves while the referee was breaking them apart. They wrestled when in close quarters and Groves tied up Eubank repeatedly.
Both boxers appeared to take the seventh off. The tempo slowed but Eubank’s eye continued to bleed and give him problems.
The eighth started as slowly as the seventh. Eubank looked frustrated and threw some windmill punches that weren’t anywhere close to Groves. Groves seemed content to circle on the outside. The last 20 seconds turned into a brawl with both men throwing wild roundhouse punches, some of which landed.
Eubank exploded at the start of the ninth round and pegged Groves with some nice shots for the first 30 seconds but lost the momentum. Eubank pressed the action again with 1:15 left in the round. He realized that he had nothing to lose. Eubank was down on points and needed a knockout to win and was going for it.
Eubank’s left hook found its mark in the 10th. The pace slowed as both men were getting winded. Groves landed some nice punches with a minute remaining. Eubank fell to the canvas after missing a punch. He got up and threw punches out of desperation. A brawl resumed within the last 10 seconds. The action was exciting, but it looked like Eubank was faltering.
Groves took the 11th round off and Eubank took advantage. Eubank won the round but couldn’t do enough to take over the fight late.
Eubank fought desperately in the 12th round and kept throwing single power punches hoping for a miracle. He flung out fists wildly but they were arm punches. His gas tank was empty but he fought valiantly.
He actually looked to have hurt Groves in the last few seconds but it was too little too late. Groves proved to be the better boxer.

Groves won a unanimous decision but Eubank proved he has a big heart. While it was a fun fight to watch, Groves was clearly the better boxer. He will move on to the finals of the World Boxing Super Series. Groves will meet the winner of Juergen Braehmer vs. Callum Smith.
The fight lived up to the hype and it wouldn’t be surprising if Groves and Eubank meet again in the future.
