Not to be confused with the short track 500m, the women’s 500m final in speedskating takes place early Sunday morning, Feb. 18.

The good thing about speedskating at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics is that you never have to worry about getting the dates of competition wrong. The bad thing is that’s because they take place in the early hours of the morning. Take, for example, the women’s 500-meter final, for which the broadcast runs from 6-7:30 a.m. ET.

(Admittedly, 6 a.m. ET is a rather reasonable time compared to the 4 a.m. starts of some of the events, even if it feels rather unreasonable for a sports competition. Oh, and the broadcast starts with the men’s team pursuit qualifications, so you could probably get away with sleeping in until 7, even.)

In any case, the women’s 500-meter final will carry on whether America is awake or not. Japan’s Nao Kodaira is expected to win gold, with compatriot Arisa Go taking bronze. Lee Sang-hwa of the host nation is the silver medal favorite in South Korea.

(If you’re wondering, what about Maame Biney? Well, two things. First, that’s short track — a sport in which skaters race against each other, rather than the clock. And second, Biney tragically did not make it past the quarterfinals. British favorite Elise Christie, then, crashed out of the final. It was a rather heartbreaking event for fans.)
