Against Switzerland, the Olympic Athletes from Russia got their first Olympics women’s hockey win at Pyeongchang, topping Switzerland 6-2
Going into the Olympics women’s hockey quarterfinals, the Olympic Athletes from Russia had yet to pick up a win. They went winless in group A, scoring merely one goal and allowing 15 in the process. However, the Olympic Athletes from Russia, led by two second-period goals, were able to pull off a win over Switzerland 6-2.
The Swiss fought admirably. Most notably, Alina Muller didn’t go down quietly, scoring the first of Switzerland’s goals. The second of its goals was scored by Lara Stadler and was assisted by Phoebe Staenz and Christine Meier. Muller’s goal was assisted by Meier.
Meanwhile, the Olympic Athletes from Russia got two second-period goals of their own. The difference? They got goals in both the first and third periods as well. Anna Shokhina got OAR’s first goal, which went unassisted.
The turning point of the game was Viktoria Kulishova’s goal, which was the second of the game for the Olympic Athletes from Russia. This came just after Stadler’s goal gave Switzerland a 2-1 lead. Kulishova’s goal was the first of four unanswered goals for the Olympic Athletes of Russia. In order, these goals were scored by Kulishova, Liana Ganeyeva, Yelena Dergachyova, and Shokhina. Shokhina led the way with four points (two goals, two assists).

What’s Next?
The Olympic Athletes from Russia move on the medal round semifinals. They will face Canada, who they lost to 5-0 in the preliminary round. OAR will be out for revenge as they hope to carry over some momentum after a much-needed win.

Meanwhile, Switzerland will face Korea in the fifth-place bracket. It will not be able to win a medal, but the Swiss are clearly heading in the right direction. Switzerland has a ton of young talent and Muller’s only going to get better from here on out. Frankly, that should strike fear into the hearts of every country’s women’s hockey team.
