Austrians have owned the women’s Super-G at the past three Olympics. Will they make it four in a row on the course at Jeongseon Alpine Centre?

The last time a country other than Austria won the women’s Super-G at the Olympics was in 2002. In Salt Lake City, Austrians failed to reach the podium at all in the event. It would prove an anomaly in the 21st century. Since 2006, Austrian skiers have come to dominate the event on the women’s side nearly as much as Norwegians have dominated men’s Super-G.

Michaela Dorfmeister won in Torino in 2006, sweeping the speed events with gold in the downhill and Super-G. Four years later, it was Andrea Fischbacher’s turn to shine on the Olympic stage. And in Sochi in 2014, Anna Fenninger kept the streak alive for Austria with a win over Maria Höfl-Riesch.

Who could potentially keep the Super-G streak alive for Austria?

In the 2017-2018 FIS World Cup season, the Super-G has largely been dominated by two women. Neither is Austrian. Switzerland’s Lara Gut and Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein sat first and second in the World Cup standings entering the Olympics. They will be the favorites to break the Austrian streak.

Hoping to keep that run of podium dominance alive will be a group of strong Austrian skiers. Anna Veith and Nicole Schmidhofer, fourth and fifth on the World Cup circuit respectively, will look to best Gut and Weirather.

For American fans, the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics offer a final opportunity to see Lindsay Vonn on the big stage. Vonn will aim to return to the podium after taking bronze in the Super-G in Vancouver.
