Saturday Night Live was off the air last week in order to give way for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Will SNL make it back on televisions tonight, February 17?
NBC has been earning some strong ratings thanks to its 2018 Winter Olympics coverage, offering up the best they can offer while still tape-delaying all of the key competitive events with US players. In fact, live streaming during Sean White’s gold medal runs on Wednesday night came second in NBC Winter Olympics streaming history, showing how more important it is to cover the games over airing Saturday Night Live.
That doesn’t mean that SNL has forgotten the Winter Olympics. On the contrary; some of their great sketches offer both biting commentary of politics at the time, including a look at an all-heterosexual US skating team to avoid Russia’s stance on homosexuality. It was during those Winter Olympics where Kate offered her breakout performance as Olya Povlatsky.
While Saturday Night Live strayed from going too hard on the Winter Olympics since NBC started broadcasting the events, the show used to have more biting satire when it was a CBS showcase. SNL even had Nancy Kerrigan on as host mere months after her famous attack planned by Jeff Gollooly and Shawn Eckhardt, lampooning the event in the opening monologue.

Tonight, unfortunately, NBC has bigger fish to fry with the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Saturday Night Live, as such, will not be on for tonight, February 17. There are no options to watch NBC Sports covering the Winter Olympics on one screen and watching Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson and Heidi Gardner on NBC proper; ratings are driving the decision to put all their millions of dollars into covering the games overseas.
In fact, Saturday Night Live won’t return for quite some time. March 3 will see Charles Barkley as host and Migos as the musical guest. For now, I hope you enjoy curling, speed skating and snowboarding!
