Ski jumping winds down at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics with the men’s team competition. Here’s how you can watch all the action from the large hill.
The fourth and final event in ski jumping takes place on Monday at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Taking flight off the normal hill, the men will compete for the team title before the discipline closes shop at the Olympics until Beijing 2022.
Germany and Austria have dominated the team competition in each of the 21st-century Winter Olympics. The Germans won the gold medal four years ago in Sochi ahead of the Austrian team. It was a reversal of fortunes from Vancouver 2010, when the Austrians pipped Germany for the gold. They have passed the top spot of the podium back and forth since 2002.
The team competition made its debut at the Winter Olympics in 1988. Finland won the first two gold medals in the team battle. Since the shift to alternating even years between Winter and Summer Olympics in 1994, however, the Finns have failed to reclaim the gold. They will be a longshot to get back to victory this time around.
The last country other than Germany or Austria to snatch the gold medal in the ski jumping team competition was Japan. That occurred in 1998, when the hosts won on the large hill in Nagano. Japan claimed bronze at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and they could be in the mix for a podium spot again.
It would also be foolhardy to count out Norway, which has been cleaning up medals left and right in this year’s Olympiad. While the hunt for gold will almost certainly come down to the Germans and Austrians, the battle for bronze might prove even more interesting.
