The Los Angeles Chargers were an example of a team that had a plus point differential but missed the playoffs. This team has few holes, but will use the 2018 NFL draft to address the ones that are there.

After a 9-7 season, with a young and talented roster around veteran quarterback Phillip Rivers, the time is now for the Los Angeles Chargers to pounce. A solid draft in 2018 will go a long way in getting back into the playoffs. As of mid-February the Chargers own a pick in each round. Here is how the team would be best served using them

Round 1 – Pick 17

Derwin James, S, Florida State

The Los Angeles Chargers are in a rare spot where they are picking in the middle of the draft without any glaring need. The team also has always utilized the best player available philosophy when addressing the draft. For this mock draft that player also fit one of the positions that the Chargers could address, safety. The pick was Derwin James of Florida State.

Tre Boston, the team’s starting safety is set to hit free agency this offseason. It is yet to be determined if the team will bring him back, though he did have a solid season. Lining up next to him was Jahleel Addae. He was another player that is not overwhelming but solid. Both could be upgraded with the right selection.

James is one of this years most interesting prospects. He started off the season with massive hype. Some listed him as the best prospect in college football. Injuries and a down year for Florida State tempered those expectations. The final few weeks, James played out of his mind, and reminded everyone that he is a first round prospect.

Now fully healthy most expect James to light up the scouting combine at the end of February. With that he will further solidify his elite status. He possess a rare blend of size, power and athleticism at the safety position. Only a redshirt sophomore, he is young enough that his skill set should continue to grow. The Chargers would be wise to grab James and plug him in either safety spot to secure an already talented secondary.
