Olympic figure skating: Ice dance short dance results and highlights
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir set a high bar, scoring a record 83.67 in the ice dance short program, beating their own previous world record.
After the short dance, there was no question who the clear favorites to win the gold medal in ice dancing were. Once Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir glided across the ice, their confidence, technical prowess, and artistic ability was shades above everyone else, placing them in first place. If they win the gold, it will be the second gold after their team performance for one of the best ice dancing duos to grace the ice. The free skate from the dominant Canadian duo — set to “Moulin Rouge” — is sure to be thrilling Monday night.
Just behind the Canadians sit the French team of Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, who scored 81.93, in a technically precise and vivacious performance.
Americans did well during the short as well, with the reigning U.S. champions, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue outperforming the darlings of the Games, the Shibutani siblings, pulling ahead of them by a hair’s breathe of .02. The third U.S. team placed seventh.
With the thrilling performance Virtue and Moir gave in the short, it’s likely that the Canadian ice dance team will secure their second gold, which they can add to the two golds and two silvers the highly decorated duo already possesses.
