The second of three Nordic combined events takes place on Tuesday with the individual large hill/10 km competition. Here’s how you can watch live action.
The Nordic combined tests skiers’ skills at both ski jumping and cross-country skiing. Beginning with a jump off the large hill, the scores from the ski jumping round are then converted via the Gundersen method into time gaps for the 10-kilometer ski race.
Eight years ago, the cross-country skiing portion of the Nordic combined was extended from 7.5 kilometers to a full 10 km race. In Vancouver, Americans finished first and second in the event as Bill Demong took gold and Johnny Spillane claimed silver. It was the Spillane also claimed silver on the normal hill, and the United States finished second in the team competition.
American fans probably won’t get to celebrate medals this time around. Four years ago in Sochi, Germans and Norwegians dominated the competition in both the individual and team competition. Eric Frenzel already successfully defended his gold on the normal hill. Jørgen Graabak, currently third in the FIS World Cup Nordic combined standings, returns to the large hill to try to repeat as Olympic champion.
Bryan Fletcher, the only American in the top 50 of the World Cup rankings, offers US fans their best hope of seeing a longshot pull through for a medal. It would be among the biggest upsets of the 2018 Winter Olympics if Fletcher reached the podium.
