Canada continues their Olympics women’s hockey dominance, topping the Olympic Athletes from Russia 5-0 in the semifinals
The Winter Olympics have never had a gold medal game in Olympics women’s hockey that didn’t feature Canada. This trend won’t be stopping this year, as Canada topped the Olympic Athletes from Russia 5-0 to advance to their sixth consecutive gold medal game. They will face Team USA as they try to win their fifth consecutive gold medal.
Forward Jennifer Wakefield helped Canada get off to a strong start, scoring just 1:50 into the game. Natalie Spooner and Blayre Turnbull got the assists on her goal. Canada got 11 shots on goal during the first period, putting early pressure on Russian goaltender Valeria Tarakanova.
The second period saw more of the same. Canada got 14 shots on goal in the second period, picking up one goal. This one was scored by captain Marie-Philip Poulin and was assisted by Melodie Daoust. Once again, Tarakanova kept the Olympic Athletes from Russia in the game.
However, Canada was able to break through in the third period, picking up three goals. Wakefield started the third period by picking up her second goal of the game 1:59 into the last frame. Her goal was assisted by Laura Fortino and Blayre Turnbull.
31 seconds later, Emily Clark struck, scoring Canada’s fourth goal of the game. Laura Stacey and Meaghan Mikkelson picked up the assists. Rebecca Johnston iced the game with a power-play goal with just under six minutes left. Daoust and Haley Irwin got the assists.
