After months of tiptoeing, the Boston Red Sox finally signed J.D. Martinez, but not everyone was happy about it.
With Boston finally signing J.D. Martinez today, Red Sox fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on their new slugger. Some were a lot happier than others, but many were surprised by the amount Martinez signed for.
Wow. I can't believed that J.D. Martinez is having a smaller contract than Yu Darvish and Eric Hosmer. @MLBNetwork @MLB

The Red Sox were the favorites to sign Martinez for essentially the last three months, as no other teams truly emerged as serious suitors for the power-hitting outfielder. But some were tired of the long process, even as news broke a deal was close.
Felt inevitable the J.D. Martinez deal would eventually come together. Made too much sense for both sides for things not to work out. Credit to Dave Dombrowski, #RedSox waited things out and got the best power bat on the market.

And when the news finally became official, people got a little bit excited.

And apparently, he’s a Touchdown Tom fan, which can’t hurt his fan appeal.
I think J.D. Martinez will fit in just fine in Boston. pic.twitter.com/lxGaROPpgA

Take a look at that lineup for Boston, now including Martinez at DH, giving the Red Sox the power hitter they were missing when David Ortiz retired.

J.D. Martinez has agreed to a deal with the Red Sox, @pedrogomezESPN reports.

Last season, he was traded to the Diamondbacks on July 18th and from that point forward he was red-hot (but it was a dry heat). pic.twitter.com/9086Ycatw9
And people believed they essentially replaced Big Papi….with another Big Papi, which can’t be a bad thing right?
And of course, Sports Illustrated gave us a look at what Martinez would look like in the Red Sox whites. Not a bad look for the slugger.

And of course, the best rivalry in baseball was renewed once again with this signing, as people started going back and forth about which AL East team was better.

And this tweet might have won the best troll of the day, throwing it back to the Aaron Boone walk-off back in 2003 that sent the Yankees to the World Series.

The Red Sox add the bat they’ve been hunting for all off-season and are starting to look like the contending team many thought they would be last year. If anyone else in their rotation can step up alongside Chris Sale, the Red Sox should be one of the best teams in baseball. Especially with Martinez batting behind Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, and the rest of the Sox.
