Winter Olympics medal count update: Monday, February 19
By Mike Dyce
The latest medal winners have gotten their hardware and here is how the 2018 Winter Olympics medal count stands after Monday, February 19.
Monday was a quiet day at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, just three events handing out medals. But it was a significant day none the less.
First, Norway’s run of dominance doesn’t take days off, even days with just a few events. Norway won gold in two of three medal events on Monday. Norway won gold in the men’s team ski jump and Norwegian Havard Lorentzen won gold in the 500m speed skating competition.
And perhaps the most intriguing event of the day, the two-man bobsled. Time in races is kept so precisely to avoid ties, yet two teams won gold on Monday. That’s right, two gold medals in a single event.
Canada’s team of Justin Kripps and Alexander Kopacz and Germany’s team of Francesco Friedrich and Thorsten Margis finished with the exact same time to win gold. So no silver medal was handed out and Latvia won the bronze medal in the event.
Germany also won a silver medal in the men’s team ski jump, to tie Norway with two medals on the day.
