2018 NFL Draft: Kansas City Chiefs 7-round mock
The Kansas City Chiefs are without their first-round choice, but still have seven selections to make in the 2018 NFL Draft.
After winning consecutive AFC West titles, one would imagine the Chiefs to feel content with their roster. In reality, that’s anything but the case.
After losing in the Wild Card round to the Tennessee Titans, general manager Brett Veach has been aggressive in the early going of the offseason. Veach traded Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, netting star corner Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick. Veach also released longtime inside linebacker Derrick Johnson and signed corner David Amerson, continuing to shore up what was an atrocious secondary.
As for the draft, Kansas City is without a first-round pick after trading up for Patrick Mahomes a year ago. Still, the Chiefs have seven choices, including two in the third and seventh rounds. Here’s what we could be looking at for a young team looking to take the next step.
Round 2 – Pick 54
Dorance Armstrong Jr., EDGE, Kansas
Kansas City has Justin Houston and little else in terms of a reliable pass rush off the edge. Dee Ford might get cut, and even if he remains, the former first-round pick has 17.5 sacks in four seasons. The Chiefs also have second-year man Tanoh Kpassagnon, but he remains a project after playing his college ball at Villanova.
Armstrong would provide some additional support for Houston, and comes from just down the road at Kansas. The Jayhawks were awful throughout Armstrong’s career, but he projects to be a terror off the edge. Despite only two sacks last season, the youngster had 10 sacks and 20 tackles for loss the year prior.
At 6-foot-4 and 246 pounds, Armstrong has the perfect size to play in Bob Sutton’s 3-4 defense. If he remains on the board at this juncture, look for Veach to strongly consider him.
