Kansas City Chiefs: 5 offseason needs
By Tre LyDay
The Kansas City Chiefs are once again looking to bring home a championship next season. They have some needs to address before they can do that.
The Kansas City Chiefs had never won consecutive division titles until now. After a 5-0 start to the season the Chiefs his somewhat of a wall, and went 1-6 the following seven weeks. They finished the season at 10-6, but failed to make it out of the Wild Card round in the playoffs.
After trading Alex Smith this offseason the team is set on their 2017 first-round draft pick Patrick Mahomes being their quarterback. No one knows exactly how well he’ll play, but after a promising Week 17 start against the Denver Broncos there’s cause for excitement.
Even though they’ll be starting a new quarterback the expectation is to still make the playoffs for this team. Not only make the playoffs, but to win and have a shot at bringing home the Lombardi Trophy.
All-Pro safety Eric Berry will return from his ruptured Achilles that cost him all of the 2017 season, which is like an offseason addition in it’s own right. The Chiefs don’t have a ton of cap space at the moment, but one can only assume they’ll look to make the necessary subtractions in order to make the necessary additions for next season.
So what are the necessary additions?
5. Help in the trenches
The Chiefs are a team heavily reliant on forcing turnovers. Since defensive coordinator Bob Sutton took over the Chiefs haven’t been shy about giving up yards. They gave up a lot more yards than they’d like last season on the ground, and that has to change next year. All told, the unit ranked 28th in total defense.
The Chiefs signed defensive tackle Bennie Logan last year in hopes of shoring up the interior. The thought was that Logan could help with the team’s struggles against the run, but things didn’t work out that way. Logan is now a free agent, and the Chiefs will have to find another guy to fill that spot.
Whether it be through the draft of in free agency the Chiefs will definitely look fill that void, and help a run defense that was ranked 25th last season. If the Chiefs can find someone to help them stop the run it would go a long way in helping cure a defense that struggled for the majority of the season.
