2. DeMarcus Lawrence

Few players on the defensive side of the ball were as disruptive as DeMarcus Lawrence was this season. With 14.5 sacks and four forced fumbles, Lawrence wreaked havoc on opposing offenses all year. Lawrence had his career best season right before hitting free agency, perfect timing for him. His presence on defense this season may force Dallas’ hand in resigning or tagging him. There is a huge chance that the Cowboys tag him and work on getting a deal done before July 16.

If Lawrence hits free agency, there will be more than a few teams trying desperately to obtain his services. Similar to Ezekiel Ansah, Lawrence plays defensive end, a premium position. This means he will demand an estimated $17.4 million under the tag. The issue is that the Cowboys only have about $18 million in cap space. They would need to make some adjustments to make it all work.

The Cowboys also have some other issues to solve. Maybe a true number two wide receiver or an upgrade at safety. Lawrence is good, but he has only had one eye catching season in his four year career. That could be concerning for the Cowboys. They do not want to invest in someone who was only good for one season.

Tagging Lawrence for one more season to see if he is legit and can repeat that kind of production is logical. The numbers are daunting and the Cowboys will need to clear some more room, but it is possible. Letting Lawrence go only to see him tear it up with another team would be unfortunate. Dallas will surely do what they can to keep his services, but they will likely need the tag to do so.
