France wins the Mixed Relay of the biathlon at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. Here are the results from Tuesday evening’s relay event in South Korea.

The first of three relay events of the biathlon in the 2018 Winter Olympics are in the books. First up was the Mixed Relay, where two male and two female biathletes would work together to try to bring home their respective countries a medal. Doing so were France, Norway and Italy on Tuesday evening at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

France would earn the gold medal with a time of 1 hour 8 minutes and 34.3 seconds. The French would have just four penalties. It should come as no surprise that the last leg of the event was anchored for France by the brilliant biathlete that is Martin Fourcade, arguably the best biathlete in the world today.

Norway just continues to clobber everybody in the 2018 Winter Olympics, especially in the biathlon. While Norway didn’t earn the gold in the mixed relay, it did take home the silver with a time of 1 hour 8 minutes and 55.2 seconds. That being said, the 11 penalties didn’t help.

It is interesting that all four members of the Norwegian mixed relay had already taken home a medal in Pyeongchang. That team was made up of Marte Oslbu, Tiril Eckhoff, Johannes Thingnes Boe and Emil Hegle Svendsen.

Just edging out Germany for the bronze medal was Italy, doing so with a time of 1 hour 9 minutes and 1.2 seconds. The Italians had seven penalties, but a well-rounded performance was enough to get past Germany but 3 hundredths of a second. Only Dominik Windisch had previously medaled in Pyeongchang before Italy came in third in the mixed relay on Tuesday evening.

Here are the results for the mixed relay of the Olympic Biathlon in Pyeongchang.

Though not a terrible performance, once again the United States went without a medal in a biathlon event. Team USA came in 15th place out of 20 competition teams. America had a time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 5.4 seconds. The United States had 12 penalties. At least America didn’t get lapped like poor Team Lithuania and Team Slovakia.

The next medal event in the biathlon will be on Thursday when the women compete in the 4 x 6 km Relay. Only two events remain for the United States to take home its first medal in the Olympic Biathlon all time. Can America do it? We will find out on Thursday and Friday if America can.
