The women’s figure skating event kicks off with the short program at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Here’s what you need to watch on TV and online.
Team USA’s Mirai Nagasu and Bradie Tennell return to the ice while teammate Karen Chen makes her 2018 Olympics debut in the women’s short program. They will have some tough competition to face in the short program, but Team USA knows how to deal with the pressure.
There are 30 women set to skate in the short program. Tennell will skate first at approximately 8:08pm ET, while Nagasu skates the in No. 20 spot and Chen debuts at No. 22. Should Tennell earn a high score, she might spend a good chunk of time in the leader’s box while she waits for the end of the night. Only the top 24 skaters will advance to the free skate on Tuesday.
Team USA will face tough competition from Italy’s Carolina Kostner and Russia’s Yevgenia Medvedeva. Canada, Russia, Japan and China have more than one skater competing. Russia’s skaters take the ice in the last five spots of the competition, meaning that once again the leaderboard will likely change quite a bit throughout the event.
All eyes will once again be on Nagasu, who landed a triple Axel in the free skate during the team competition. Tennell had a strong showing in the competitive team short program, as did Nagasu, who didn’t finish in the top 3 despite landing the difficult element.
