The penultimate event on the women’s Alpine skiing calendar takes place at Jeongseon Alpine Centre. Here’s how to watch the women’s downhill live online.
Eight years ago, Lindsey Vonn blew up as one of the faces of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Vonn won the women’s downhill and took bronze in the Super-G. Then, four years later, Vonn sat out Sochi 2014 due to a knee injury. At 33 years old, the Pyeongchang Winter Games are likely the last chance for the American to rediscover Olympic glory.
Vonn was shut out in the women’s Super-G, however, as Ester Ledecka pulled off the stunner to steal away gold from the field. By the time the snow settled at Jeongseon Alpine Centre, Vonn finished in a tie for sixth place. Given that she had slipped to 10th in the FIS World Cup standings in the event, it was hardly an unsurprising finish.
The downhill, however, is another beast. Vonn is ranked second in the most recent World Cup standings in the downhill, and Vonn won gold the last time she got to contest the event at the Olympics. She will be among the favorites when the women hit the course at Jeongseon.
Vonn is hardly the only favorite in the field, however.
Another American, Mikaela Shiffrin, is better known for her prowess in the technical events. Though she failed to repeat as Olympic champion in the slalom, Shiffrin already won one gold in Pyeongchang in the giant slalom. She might not be known as a speed event specialist, but Shiffrin is currently ranked fifth in the World Cup downhill standings and could pull out a podium finish.
The current World Cup leader, Italy’s Sofia Goggia, will look to keep the Americans off the top step of the podium. Super-G podium finishers Anna Veith and Tina Weirather and defending downhill bronze medalist Lara Gut will also factor into the mix of contenders. Ragnhild Mowinckel will try to add yet another medal to Norway’s prodigious haul to date.
There will be no surprises from Super-G champion Ledecka, as the Czech star prepares for the snowboarding portion of her Olympics. Instead, if you want surprises, look out for someone like Michelle Gisin. The Swiss skier will try to match her sister Dominique and earn a gold medal of her own.
