Updated Olympics men’s hockey bracket: Quarterfinals match-ups are set
The quarterfinals are set. Here is the updated Olympics men’s hockey bracket.
Norway pulled off a minor upset with their 2-1 overtime victory over Slovenia in the Olympics men’s hockey tournament. Meanwhile, Finland survived a minor scare from South Korea
Here is a look at the updated bracket.
Finland against Canada is the most anticipated game in the quarterfinal round. Both teams were potential medalists prior to the tournament and one won’t make it to the semifinals. Finland looked to be playing at half speed against South Korea and will undoubtedly raise their game against Canada. The Canadian squad had a solid showing in group play and should be up for the challenge on Wednesday morning.
Norway moves on to face the Olympic Athletes from Russia. OAR was the highest scoring team in group play, potting 14 goals in three games. Norway will have to find a way to slow down the high-powered OAR offense while somehow mustering up a couple of goals of their own. Norway has been the most penalized team in the tournament thus far. They’ll have to clean up their discipline if they hope to have any shot. OAR is arguably the favorite to win it all and Norway is the weakest team remaining.
Germany will take on top seed Sweden in the final quarterfinal matchup. These two teams met in group play, with Sweden skating away with a 1-0 victory. Germany outshot Sweden 28-26 in that contest. Viktor Stalberg’s goal two minutes into the game held up as Jhonas Enroth came away with the shutout. It should be another defensive affair on Wednesday morning.
Earlier in the day, Team USA moved on to the quarterfinals with a 5-1 thumping over Slovakia. They’ll meet the Czech Republic for the right to play in the semifinals. That matchup should be a competitive affair.
The quarterfinals begin at 10:10 p.m. ET on Tuesday night.
