2. Safety

Tre Boston is really the Chargers only major free agent of note. Boston isn’t overly physical, but he is coming off by far the best season of his career. Boston is at his best away from the line of scrimmage and is very capable in a single high role. He is much better in coverage than against the run. Los Angeles could look for a better all around safety in the draft or free agency or could just be quite content to retain the 25-year-old Boston.

With Gus Bradley as the defensive coordinator running a Seahawks-based scheme, it is imperative to have a safety that can handle covering the deep middle of the field, which again, Boston does well. That isn’t to say he is Earl Thomas though.

Even if Boston is retained, Los Angeles doesn’t have a lot of safety depth, especially with Adrian Phillips’ contract also expiring. The Chargers basically only played three safeties last year in Boston, Phillips and Jahleel Addae, who is a quality strong safety in the prime of his career.
