Germany shocks Sweden with a 4-3 victory in overtime in the quarterfinals of the Olympics men’s hockey tournament.

Patrick Reimer sent Sweden home earlier than expected in the Olympics men’s hockey tournament with his overtime goal on Thursday morning. Reimer capped off a great individual effort by banging the puck past Viktor Fasth and into the net, giving Germany a 4-3 victory and pulling off the biggest upset of the tournament.

The game was all Sweden from the start. Until it wasn’t. Sweden opened the game with a 13-0 shot advantage, but Danny Aus Den Birken stood tall and didn’t allow a puck past him. Germany weathered the storm and got two goals in less than a minute by Christian Ehrhoff and Marcel Noebels to a take a 2-0 lead into the second period.

Sweden put the pressure on in the second period, but Germany limited prime scoring chances.
Trailing 2-0 with five minutes gone in the third, Sweden turned to 17-year-old and consensus number one overall pick in the upcoming draft, Rasmus Dahlin, who had not played a shift all game, for a spark. Dahlin delivered, getting his shot through from the point, setting up a rebound goal for Anton Lander to cut the lead to 2-1.

Germany immediately responded thanks to an offensive zone giveaway from Dahlin, which turned into a goal by Dominik Kahun.

Sweden pushed back, quickly cashing in on the power play on a goal by Patrik Hersley with just over 10 minutes remaining. Two minutes later, Michael Wikstrand tied the game on a shot from a high slot with Aus Den Birken screened.

Neither team scored in the final minutes of regulation, setting up overtime, and Reimer’s eventual heroics.

Sweden had allowed one goal in three group play games. Aus Den Birken finished with 31 saves. Fasth had 21 saves.
