Move over, Jamie Anderson: Austria’s Anna Gasser may be the best female snowboarder in the world, taking gold in the inaugural women’s big air event on Wednesday.

We were treated the biggest tricks the best female snowboarders in the world have to offer on Wednesday night in the big air final at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

While all the women in the field went big, Austria’s Anna Gasser, the United States’ Jamie Anderson and New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski Synnott truly delivered on the promise of the event, throwing down the most eye-popping tricks of the day.

The tricky aspect of the big air final is the scoring. Riders took three runs, with their two highest runs counting toward their final score. However, the women had to spin in opposite directions on the two runs that get scored, which proved to be the great equalizer of the event.

Nearly everyone fell on her third and final run, but not Gasser, who delivered an incredibly clean backside (cab) double cork 1080 to secure herself the first women’s big air gold medal in Olympics history.

Let’s take a look back at the breathtaking moments and biggest tricks from this groundbreaking event.

Highlights

Team USA’s Anderson, who took gold in the women’s slopestyle event earlier in these Games, threw down the gauntlet on her first run with a frontside 1080, earning a high score to that point of 90.00:

New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski Synnott followed up with a highly technical run that earned her a 92 on her second attempt:

Austria’s Gasser executed a near-perfect backside double cork 1080 on her second run, which was good for an 89.00.

That was a controversial score, as it turned out. To that point, Gasser’s trick was perhaps the cleanest we had seen all night, and in all likelihood her score should have had a 9 in front of it.

On her third run, however, Gasser showed the world what she was made of, pushing Anderson squarely into silver medal position.

The judges more than made up for their earlier oversight in rewarding Gasser’s ability, and while Anderson and Sadowski Synnott turned in truly impressive performances, there’s no question who the best female big air snowboarder in the world is after tonight.
