Olympics women’s hockey bronze medal game, Finland vs. OAR results, highlights

Finland has won the bronze medal in Olympics women’s hockey after beating the Olympic Athletes from Russia 3-2.

The bronze medal game in Olympics women’s hockey was as exciting as it gets, this side of Team USA vs. Canada. In an exciting affair, Finland topped the Olympic Athletes from Russia 3-2 to win the bronze medal. This is their third bronze medal in women’s hockey and their first since 2010.

Though the game was back and forth for most of it, Finland capitalized in the second period, picking up two goals. This turned out to be the difference. The first period was evenly matched, with both teams picking up nine shots on goal.

However, Finland capitalized on an OAR penalty with a power-play goal by Petra Nieminen just over two minutes into the game. This goal was assisted by defenseman Minnamari Tuominen and Susanna Tapani.

Merely 10 seconds into the second period, Finland took a 2-0 lead thanks to a goal by Tapani, assisted by Michelle Karvinen. But just two and a half minutes later, the Olympic Athletes from Russia got on the board with a goal from their captain Olga Sosina. This goal was assisted by Lyudmila Belyakova.

Finland got their second goal of the period from Linda Valimaki, this one assisted by Venla Hovi. Belyakova made things interesting with a power play goal after the Olympic Athletes from Russia capitalized on a Finnish penalty. The rest of the period was a defensive struggle, as the two teams combined for just seven shots on goal.

The Olympic Athletes from Russia let their frustrations get the best of them in the third period. They got 27 penalty minutes in the third, and 35 penalty minutes overall in the game. This prevented them from getting sustained momentum and gave Finland way too many chances. With the gold medal game on Thursday night, the bronze medal game served as a nice appetizer for the main course.
