Updated Olympics men’s hockey bracket: Medal round is set
See who will compete for a medal in our updated look at the Olympics men’s hockey bracket with all quarterfinal games complete.
The medal round matchups are set and there is one noticeable surprise in the final four:
Germany stunned top seed Sweden in overtime to setup a showdown with Canada. Germany has won both games in overtime, getting clutch goals from Yannic Seidenberg against Switzerland and Patrick Reimer against Sweden.
Meanwhile, Canada fought off Finland, holding on a 1-0 victory. Backup goalie Kevin Poulin entered the game early in the second for starter Ben Scrivens after a Finnish player was knocked into Scrivens. Poulin will likely be the starter against Germany. He has not allowed a goal in the tournament, stopping 34 combined shots against South Korea and Finland.
The bottom half of the bracket pits the high-powered Olympic Athletes from Russia offense against the tight checking Czech Republic.
Czech Republic outlasted USA in a shootout, with goalie Pavel Francouz stopping all five US shooters. Petr Koukal provided the lone goal for the Czech’s in the shootout. Czech Republic is the only team without a loss remaining in the tournament. OAR had no issue against Norway, winning by a score of 6-1. In the three games since losing their opening game 3-2 against Slovakia, OAR has outscored opponents 18-3.
The medal round begins at 2:40 a.m. ET on Friday morning with Czech Republic against OAR. Canada and Germany will do battle shortly after at 7:10 a.m. ET.
